Women with eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, may take a bit longer to get pregnant than other women, a new study has found.

U.K. researchers asked 11,088 pregnant women to complete questionnaires at 12 and 18 weeks of gestation. Of those women, 171 had anorexia at some point in their lives, 199 had bulimia, and another 82 had experienced both conditions. A larger proportion of the women with the eating disorders took more than six months to conceive compared to those with no history of eating disorders. However, women with eating disorders weren’t more likely to take longer than 12 months to conceive, the investigators found. Women with anorexia or bulimia were more than twice as likely to have received treatment or help to get pregnant.

The study also found that 41.5 percent of women with anorexia said their pregnancy was unplanned, compared with 28.6 percent of women in the general population. This suggests that women with anorexia may underestimate their chances of conceiving, the researchers concluded.

“This research highlights that there are risks to fertility associated with eating disorders. However, the high rates of unplanned pregnancies in women with a history of anorexia suggest that women may be underestimating their chances of conceiving,” said lead author Abigail Easter, from the Institute of Psychiatry at King’s College London.

They are leaders in reproductive medicine in Ireland and were the first to bring Donor Gamete, using egg or sperm donors, to Ireland in 2002. In response to the shortage of suitable egg donors and long waiting times in the UK and Ireland, Sims Clinic created the European Donor Egg Programme.

There are no waiting lists and the risk of failure is reduced by only using donors with proven fertility. At other clinics, they often divide the retrieved eggs between two or more recipients but at Sims IVF they offer one-to-one donation, meaning eggs retrieved from the donor’s cycle are allocated solely for you and the success rates speak for themselves.

The Sims Clinic has state of the art facilities and being based near the centre of Dublin is easy to get to from Dublin airport making it an especially easy trip for UK couples – they’ll even collect you from the airport.

So if you’re thinking of using donor eggs, think of the European Donor Egg Programme at Sims IVF in Dublin. Take a look at the video’s on their website for more info.

Their commitment is to care for you, so that you can realise your dream of having a baby.

Salmon croquettes not only contain the highly prized omega 3 fatty acids, but also several herbs and grains with even more fertility boosting powers.

Fertility Boosting Quick & Easy Salmon Croquettes – makes 6 croquettes
A perfect complement to our Juicy Fertility Soup are these salmon croquettes – loaded with a host of powerful fertility boosters including omega 3, fibre and folic acid – all super nutrients for male and female fertility.

Ingredients:
• 1 can of salmon (8 oz)
• ¼ cup sweet onion, finely grated
• 2 tbsp minced basil or parsley
• ¼ to ½ tsp ground black pepper (or to taste)
• 2 large eggs, well beaten
• 1 to 1½ cups ground whole wheat cracker crumbs
or whole wheat bread crumbs
• ¼ cup ground flax seeds.
• 3 tbsp olive oil

Directions:
1. Drain the salmon and place in bowl, reserving liquid separately. Using a fork, separate or flake the fish. Mix in the grated onion, chopped basil or parsley and pepper; add two beaten eggs and blend until fish is moistened.

2. Add ½ cup of ground cracker crumbs or bread crumbs and ¼ cup of ground flax seed. Using your hands mix the crumbs into the salmon mixture until the consistency is thick enough to form patties. If too dry add reserved salmon liquid, two tablespoons at a time; if too wet add more crumbs. Place in the refrigerator 10 minutes, to chill and set the mixture.

3. Remove from refrigerator and roll mixture into balls, then flatten into patties. Coat each pattie with bread crumbs.

4. In a skillet heat the olive oil until it sizzles; lower heat and add patties. When the edges of the patties start to turn brown, gently flip and brown two to three minutes.

5. Serve warm with ketchup or tartar sauce made by blending two tablespoons of low-fat mayonnaise with 1 teaspoon of dill relish. Or top with grated cheese and onion mixture for a tangy taste.

The “Instituto Murciano de Fertilidad” (IMFER) was created in Murcia, South of Spain, in 1998. We offer different treatments that are customized to your case: we perform all the assisted reproduction techniques authorized by the Spanish law. IMFER has gradually grown to offer you the best service: we are now a medium size clinic with a staff of 20 people, but we have not lost the spirit that we have always instilled in our relati onship with the pati ent: we take care of you in a personalized and friendly way.

“We think that patients who undergo a fertility treatment do not only need the most advanced technology, but also consistent support along the whole process” says Umberta Pennaroli, head of international coordination department at IMFER clinic.

Every year IMFER assists many overseas patients who want to undergo a fertility treatment. In order to provide a better service, IMFER offers a department devoted exclusively to them. The two international coordinators will be in charge of following your case, replying to your questions and solving your doubts at any time. Through permanent contact by phone or email, they will act as liaison between you and the medical team, supporting you in each phase of the treatment.

“Many of our overseas patients come to our clinic for treatments that have long waiting list in their country, such as egg donation” says Sarah Noëson, international coordinator.

Egg donation in Spain
In Spain egg donation is a legal, totally anonymous and confidential procedure. In order to maximize your chances, at IMFER all the eggs produced by a donor in one cycle are assigned exclusively to a recipient. With the aim to facilitate the development of the treatment and the arrangements for your stay here, we will do our best to adjust to your time availability. Normally you can undergo embryo transfer about 2-3 months after the first consultation. In some cases there is also the possibility of a first consultation by video-conference or by phone.

Improving rates with latest technologies
At IMFER we think patients must be considered as a whole, which is why we do not only apply the most advanced technology – such as IMSI (Intracytoplasmic Morphologically-Selected Sperm Injecti on), SET (Single Embryo Transfer) and vitrificati on of both oocytes and embryos, among others – but also recur to traditional techniques such as acupuncture. IMFER is one of the few clinics in Spain to propose IMSI, a technique especially useful in infertility cases caused by male factor. This high-resoluti on imaging system allows selecting unaltered sperms, thus, offers better results in pregnancy rates and, at the same time, reduces the risk of miscarriages.

Also, IMFER uses egg and embryo freezing by means of vitrification. This process avoids the formati on of ice crystals that may tear the cell and lead to its death during the freezing/thawing process. The clinic has just relocated to state-of-the-art facilities, in order to improve the quality of the services without losing the personal and warm contact we have with our patients. For more info, visit www.IMFER.com or call us on +34 968/28 28 66 and ask for Umberta. IMFER, Av. de los Pinos no5, 30009 Murcia, Spain
